From Archives to Algorithms: AI, Digital Humanities and the Transformation of Historical Knowledge

The emergence of the digital turn represents one of the most significant intellectual and technological transformations in contemporary digital humanities discourse, fundamentally reshaping the disciplines of history, archaeology, heritage preservation, and public history through the integration of advanced digital technologies. The paper examines how Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), LiDAR, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), 3D modelling, machine learning, remote sensing, and digital archives have produced a major epistemological and methodological shift in the ways historical knowledge is collected, interpreted, preserved, and disseminated. The study highlights that computational systems and large-scale digitization projects have expanded global access to historical records, accelerated archaeological exploration, and strengthened preservation of endangered cultural heritage threatened by warfare, climate change, environmental degradation, urbanization, and mass tourism. The findings further reveal that technologies such as LiDAR and photogrammetry have enabled archaeologists to uncover hidden archaeological landscapes and digitally reconstruct damaged monuments with remarkable precision, smart museums, virtual exhibitions, and AI-based curation systems have transformed public engagement through immersive and interactive historical experiences. At the same time, the paper critically examines important ethical and methodological concerns associated with the digital turn, including algorithmic bias, digital colonialism, commercialization of heritage, techno-linguistic inequality, authenticity of virtual reconstruction, and unequal access to technological infrastructure between developed and developing regions. The study emphasizes that the future of digital heritage studies depends on balancing technological innovation with methodological rigor, ethical responsibility, sustainability, community participation, cultural sensitivity, and inclusive knowledge production. The findings demonstrate that the digital turn has redefined historical interpretation, archaeological practice, cultural memory and public interaction with the past in the twenty-first century.
